Golfers: Swing this TPI Workout

Most people rally the motivation to work out once a day. Kelsey Waddell keeps the momentum going eight hours a day, five days a week. As Geneva National’s head personal trainer, Kelsey’s goal is to help clients build the discipline to be fit for life -- not just in this moment.

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)-certified, Waddell is qualified to train clients of every age as well as those recovering from injuries, including those undergoing cardiac rehab. Not surprisingly, she also specializes in training rotational athletes – namely, golfers.

Recently earning her Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certification, Kelsey can assess how physical capabilities and limitations affect the characteristics of a golfer’s swing and ball projection.

“As a new golfer, my swing was short and tight,” says Jim Teskoski, who takes Men’s Yoga for Golf and Pilates at Geneva National's Wellness Center. “Now I can feel my body stretching like never before, my posture has improved, my swing is longer -- and when I take golf lessons, I’m aware of what muscle group to fire, something I couldn’t do before.”

A client of Kelsey’s for four years, Joel Mirsberger also sees benefits on the links from time spent in the Wellness Center. “Kelsey’s workouts have enhanced the tempo and smoothness of my swing while helping me shift my body weight and get off the tee successfully.”

While it might not appear so, golf is a very physical sport, says Waddell, and a specialized workout adapted to each individual’s limits and potential will benefit the athlete greatly.

“Kelsey has been training me for the past 5 1/2 years, and is very much the reason for my achievements in golf,” says Howard Storck, Geneva National’s current Senior Men’s Champion. “I can already see positive results from the targeted exercises she has added to my workouts as a result of her TPI certification.”

Golfers interested in trying one of the golf-focused classes should contact Geneva National’s Membership Director Kate Montgomery, who can arrange for a complimentary class or a walk-through with Kelsey.

“Whether you’re sweating through the latest workout trend or just stepping into the gym for the first time,," says Kelsey, "I look forward to helping you determine your fitness goals and finding a personalized routine that's just right for you.”
